Clarkesville

Clarkesville was chartered in 1823 and named for John Clark, Governor of Georgia from 1819-23. Clarkesville is the county seat and is the home to the county courthouse and other government offices.

Clarkesville was also a summer resort town in the early 1900’s with several hotels. There are a number of stately old homes in the town. Visitors can stop by the Mauldin House Visitors Center, one block off the square, for information on the area, the Old Clarkesville Cemetery, historic homes, historic churches and other interesting sites. Clarkesville's historic square is home to a growing number of antique shops, stores, restaurants and specialty shops.
