Demorest
Named for prohibitionist William Jennings Demorest, this town was founded in 1889 by a group of entrepreneurs from Indiana, New Hampshire, and Ohio who set up small factories. Deeds to the original land lots state that "anyone allowing wine or whiskey to be sold or given away on his property forfeited his lands" The town founders later helped establish Piedmont College in Demorest, which today is a vibrant liberal arts institution with an enrollment of more than 2,000 students.
