The Habersham Veterans Wall of Honor is run by a committee of 8 (3 being original members); the Chairman is Larry Whitfield, and the Vice Chairman is Jack Broome.
In the past, Grant Reeves Post 7720 has held two annual ceremonies at the Wall. Beginning September 2018, Post 7720 will hold three annual ceremonies: Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day, and a (new) 911 Candlelight Service.
To place a name on the Wall, a copy of an Honorable discharge (DD214) needs to be delivered to Larry Whitfield. (Contact info is below.)
There are currently 3 Walls in place with a fourth scheduled for Veterans Day (2018.) The Wall is currently having the names engraved, and names are already being gathered for a fifth Wall.
A brief history of the Habersham Veterans Wall of Honor project: It was organized and started in 2001; property was donated by Ethicon in 2006; groundwork construction began in 2010; grounded landmark sign and flags were put up in 2013; first Wall was placed in January 2014; second Wall was placed in October 2015; third Wall went up in April 2017; (fourth Wall in progress); fifth Wall being planned.
There are 1608 names per wall, going back as far as the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, Mountaineers of 1836, the War Between the States, the Spanish American War, and on to current Veterans of Habersham. Each Wall costs in excess of $25 thousand using funds from donations.
The Habersham Veterans Wall of Honor is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Each year, a portion of the proceeds from the Habersham Freedom Run go to the Wall of Honor. In 2016, the Chamber donated $2500 from the proceeds; Last year, that amount was increased to $3000.
